- The Dorchester Opportunity Group is a committee run specialist preschool setting for children with a range of additional needs. Children can be referred to the Group by other professionals who may be involved. We have a high staff: child ratio to ensure the best level of support. We use Signalong, Picture Exchange Communication (PEC’s) and Promoting Early Interactive Conversation(PEIC-D) with children who have communication difficulties. Facilities in the Centre include soft play, sensory room, and a hydrotherapy pool. Staff are trained and experienced in working with children with additional needs. We have supported children with autistic spectrum disorders, global developmental delay, speech and language delay, complex medical conditions, Down’s syndrome, and many other needs. Many children come to us without a diagnosis, but with some initial concerns regarding a child’s development or behaviour. We aim to offer all children attending the Group a safe, stimulating and fun environment where they can play and learn while working towards the Early Years Foundation Stage targets and transition to their next educational setting. Individual plans are devised for all children after an initial settling in and assessment period. These plans are regularly assessed (through observations) and revised as children progress. Parents/carers input is essential and concerns may be discussed with staff at any time and in the termly meetings with the Manager. Parent comment: “They are always very welcoming, happy, friendly and positive towards myself and my child.”¦An application will be made to the Local Authority for Early SEND Support to enable us to maintain a higher adult/child ratio or 1:1 where needed.
