Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Local Offer

Support for children and young people with SEN and disabilities

At Sunbeams, we welcome all families. When your child starts we understand that this can occasionally be a daunting time, especially if they have requirements that need to be met. We will always try our best to accommodate everyone. When your child starts they will be allocated a Keyworker, who will work closely with your child to build a positive relationship and you will be able to liaise with them about any needs your child may have. Your child will have a Learning journey, which will help the Practitioner to see at what age range your child is working in and it will help them to identify any concerns, extra support or help that your child may need. Another way of identifying any needs would be via communication between practitioner and parent. We welcome all parents to come and speak to any of our team if they have any queries or concerns. We will ask you to complete an 'All About Me' form on behalf of your child which will give us an insight into these areas and help us to identify the activities and support to be provided. We recommend new children attend a couple of settling in sessions before they start, so they can meet the staff and familiarise themselves with the new environment. Parents/carers can choose to stay or leave their child during these settling sessions. Support will be given by the key person, who will be in sessions with the child, along with the SENCO or room leader. They will identify individual needs, plan next steps, accessing additional support from others where necessary e.g. Speech and Language Therapist (SALT) or applications for additional funding. We can access a wide variety of professionals that can help meet your child’s needs. Whilst your child is with us or before attending if needed, we will access training relevant to your child’s needs wherever possible if we don’t already have that training or expertise. We are in partnership with Portage and all staff have training in PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System). Our SENCO also attends regular meetings throughout the year to keep up to date with any changes. When your child is old enough to attend school, we will work closely with them to ensure that your child is getting the smoothest transition possible. We will assess your child’s needs and any additional funding or resources that are needed will be applied/bought for with their specific requirements in mind. This could be that extra staff are required as your child needs a one to one, or we may need specific equipment or staff training in specialist areas.
